Dissecting my inclination to Intuitive Art vs meticulous copperplate calligraphy

October 4, 2024 | by Shagun

What a fascinating comparison! Isn’t it?

Intuitive art and meticulous copperplate calligraphy represent two vastly different approaches to creative expression. If you can’t imagine both these arts in one single blog, imagine myself living with them in my head or maybe heart, idk, this stuff is complicated.

Intuitive art is characterized by spontaneity, freedom, experimentation, and expression over perfection. Intuitive art often results in organic, abstract, or expressive pieces, emotional authenticity, and unexpected surprises.

While Copperplate calligraphy is characterized by precision, careful attention to letterform accuracy, spacing, and alignment, measured movements, and calculated pressure, adherence to historical lettering styles and perfectionism while striving for flawless execution and aesthetic appeal. Copperplate calligraphy often results in elegant, refined, and sophisticated lettering, ornate flourishes, timeless pieces.

While these two approaches seem disparate, I have been thinking can how they can complement each other because I like both. The freedom of intuition and perfection and technique of copperplate. It can be as dramatic as a war between my heart and head. But I guess balancing freedom and control is the way forward (for real life?). I want to still explore if and how one can incorporate intuitive elements into copperplate calligraphy and add some of their own personality and whimsy.

Well that’s for me, how do you approach creativity?

Do you lean toward intuition or precision?

What values do you prioritize in your artistic endeavors: expression, technique, or both?

How can you incorporate elements of both intuitive art and meticulous copperplate calligraphy into your creative practice? I’d love to hear your thoughts!
